W., Washington, D. C. Technological advances in the field of digital communications and the widespread use of Internet networking protocols in recent years have led to the emergence of new digital multimedia applications and devices. While user applications have traditionally been circuit switched and focused on voice, these new applications are predominately packet-switched and centered on data. A significant characteristic of these applications is the asymmetry of traffic flow both to and from the user. Therefore, efficient use of systems resources may suggest utilizing a duplexed approach that supports the asymmetric nature of this form of traffic, such as TDD. At the tutorial, representatives of the TDD Coalition will provide a comparative overview of duplexing schemes including both frequency division and time division duplexing. The performance- related parameters of each scheme, such as spectral efficiency and compatibility with advanced signal processing techniques will be discussed. The current worldwide markets and applications for TDD technology in both mobile and fixed wireless areas will then be discussed. A discussion of relevant globally accepted standards supporting TDD operations will follow. Next, the TDD Coalition will present an analysis of interference mitigation techniques. Finally, emerging opportunities for both fixed and mobile TDD applications in the United States will be discussed. Members of the public are encouraged to attend this tutorial.
