C. 20554 News Media Information 202 / 418- 0500 Fax- On- Demand 202 / 418- 2830 TTY 202 / 418- 2555 Internet: http:// www. fcc. gov ftp. fcc. gov DA 01- 35 Released: January 10, 2001 AUXILIARY BROADCAST FREQUENCY COORDINATOR DESIGNATED FOR THE 2002 OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES IN SALT LAKE CITY, UT The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has designated the Salt Lake Organizing Committee (SLOC) as the single point of contact for coordinating operations under Section 74. 24 of the Rules, 47 C. F. R. §74.24, from December 1, 2001 through March 31, 2002 for the 2002 Winter Olympic Games and Paralympic Games to be held in Salt Lake City, Utah 1 . This designation will allow for advance coordination of auxiliary broadcast frequency usage in the designated area. To minimize harmful interference, all Parts 74, 78 and 101 licensees sharing spectrum available under Part 74 of the Commission’s Rules and operating in the designated area are covered by this action. The designated area is defined as a circle around Salt Lake City, UT with a 100- kilometer radius for terrestrial stations and a 150- kilometer radius for any mobile operations onboard aircraft 2 . The FCC took similar action when it designated auxiliary broadcast frequency coordinators for the 1996 and 2000 National Political Conventions, the 1984 and 1996 Summer Olympic Games, and the previous visits of Pope John Paul II to the United States. These actions were taken as a result of our concern that uncoordinated use of auxiliary broadcast stations on a special temporary authority basis might result in spectrum congestion and excessive interference causing less complete broadcast coverage. We believe that the potential for a similar situation exists during the 2002 Summer Olympic Games scheduled to be held in Salt Lake City, UT. As a result, SLOC has been designated as the auxiliary broadcast frequency coordinator for the duration of the Olympic Games. All short- term auxiliary broadcast use under Part 74, without exception, shall be coordinated in advance through the SLOC Coordinator, Salt Lake Organizing Committee, 257 East 200 South, Salt Lake City, UT 84111, 801- 212- 2428, FAX 801- 212- 2192. Further information is available at SLOC’s Web Site, www. saltlake2002.com/ games/ broadcast_ frame. html. The local frequency coordinator will provide assistance to all local and non- local Part 74 licensees, as well as all Part 78 and 101 licensees sharing spectrum available under Part 74, for temporary fixed, mobile and portable installations. The contact for the Wireless Telecommunications Bureau is the Licensing and Technical Analysis Branch at (717) 338- 2646. Action by Chief, Licensing and Technical Analysis Branch. 1 We note that Section 74. 24 normally allows eligible broadcasters to operate auxiliary broadcast stations on a short- term basis, not to exceed 720 hours annually, without prior Commission authorization. 2 The center of Salt Lake City, UT for the purposes of determining the coordination area is defined by the coordinates 40- 45- 22.8NLAT, 111- 53- 28.8WLONG referenced to NAD 83. 1 2 - FCC - 2
