 WIRELINE  COMPETITION  BUREAU  EXTENDS  PRELIMINARY  EXTENSION  DATE  FOR  CALEA  SECTION  103  COMPLIANCE  FOR 
 WIRELINE  CARRIERS  TO  JUNE  30,  2002

 The  Common  Carrier  Bureau,  (now  the  Wireline  Competition  Bureau)  of  the  Federal  Communications  Commission  (Commission  or  FCC)  previously  released  three  orders  granting 
 more  than  twelve  hundred  petitions  filed  by  wireline  carriers  seeking  extensions  of  the  deadline  for  complying  with  the  capability  requirements  of  section  103  of  the  Communications  Assistance 
 for  Law  Enforcement  Act  (CALEA).  1  Due  to  the  large  number  of  extension  petitions  filed  by  wireline  carriers,  the  statutory  obligation  to  consult  with  the  Attorney  General,  2  and  the  amount 
 of  time  and  resources  necessary  to  consider  fully  the  merits  of  each  petition,  we  were  unable  to  take  final  action  on  all  of  the  extension  petitions.  Accordingly,  some  petitioners  received  only 
 preliminary  extensions  of  the  deadline  for  complying  with  CALEA  section  103  until  March  31,  2002.  We  are  unable  to  take  final  action  on  the  petitions  for  the  petitioners  listed  in  the  attached 
 Appendix  before  March  31,  2002.  Accordingly,  the  petitioners  named  in  the  attached  Appendix  are  deemed  to  have  a  preliminary  extension  of  the  deadline  for  complying  with  CALEA  section 
 103  until  June  30,  2002,  or  until  superseded  by  a  final  determination  on  the  merits  of  the  underlying  extension  request.
