C. 20554 News Media Information 202 / 418- 0500 Internet: http:// www. fcc. gov TTY: 1- 888- 835- 5322 DA 06- 840 April 11, 2006 WIRELINE COMPETITION BUREAU GRANTS REQUEST FOR EXTENSION OF TIME TO FILE COMMENTS IN RESPONSE TO THE COMMISSION’S NOTICE OF PROPOSED RULEMAKING TO ENHANCE SECURITY AND AUTHENTICATION STANDARDS FOR ACCESS TO CPNI CC Docket No. 96- 115 On April 10, 2006, the United States Department of Justice, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Drug Enforcement Administration, and the United States Department of Homeland Security filed a request for a two- week extension of time to file comments in response to the Commission’s Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) to enhance security and authentication standards for access to customer proprietary network information (CPNI). 1 The current deadline for filing comments is April 14, 2006. 2 Although requests for extensions of time are not routinely granted, 3 we do occasionally grant limited extensions of time when we find that the public interest would be served by doing so. In this case, we believe that granting an extension of time to file comments and reply comments in this proceeding is in the public interest. The current deadline for filing comments falls during the Passover holiday. As a result, some commenters in this proceeding may be unavailable on the days leading up to the filing deadline. Given the importance of the issues raised in the NPRM and the timing of the current filing deadlines, we believe that all parties will benefit equally from an extension of these deadlines, and that such an extension will enable the Commission to obtain a more complete and well- developed record in this proceeding. Parties therefore have until April 28, 2006 to file comments on the NPRM in this docket, and until May 19, 2006 to file reply comments. For further information regarding this proceeding, contact Tim Stelzig, Wireline Competition Bureau, (202) 418- 0942. 1 Implementation of the Telecommunications Act of 1996: Telecommunications Carriers’ Use of Customer Proprietary Network Information and Other Customer Information; Petition for Rulemaking to Enhance Security and Authentication Standards for Access to Customer Proprietary Network Information, Notice of Proposed Rulemaking, CC Docket No. 96- 115, FCC 06- 10 (rel.
