Federal Communications Commission Washington, D.C. 20554 June 27, 2007 DA 07-2818 Mr. Jerry D. Janow Saucer Ridge Amateur Radio Association 1217 West Mathews Roswell, New Mexico 88203 Re: Request for Reconsideration of Dismissal of Application File No. 0002843579 Dear Mr. Janow: This letter is in response to your request for reconsideration of the dismissal of the above- referenced application, which requested that the call sign NM5UFO be assigned to the amateur service club station of the Saucer Ridge Amateur Radio Association. You believe that the assignment of the requested call sign would be in keeping with the theme that Roswell, New Mexico has been known since 1947 as the crash site of a UFO. For the reasons discussed herein, we deny your request. You filed the above-referenced vanity call sign application on December 11, 2006, seeking to modify the license for Amateur station KE5LRJ to change the call sign to NM5UFO. The application was dismissed on December 29,2006 because the requested call sign was not available.! On December 29,2006, you requested reconsideration of the dismissal. Only call signs that are in the sequential call sign system may be requested as vanity call signs! The Commission issues public announcements detailing the procedures of the sequential call sign system.3 A call sign with a two-letter prefix followed by a number and a three-letter suffix, such as NM5UFO, is known as a 2-by-3 call sign.4 As noted on the Commission's webpage, only call signs of a 2-by-3 format with the first letter K or W -but not N -are available for assignment in the sequential call sign system.s Consequently, call sign NM5UFO is not available for assignment in the sequential call sign system and is thus not available as a vanity call sign. We therefore conclude that your application was properly dismissed. Accordingly, IT IS ORDERED that, pursuant to Sections 4(i) and 405 of the Communications Act of 1934, as amended, 47 U.S.C: §§ 1 54(i), 405, and Section 1.106 of the Commission's Rules, 47 C.F .R. § 1.106, the request to reconsider the dismissal of application File No. 0002843579 filed by Mr. Jerry D. Janow IS DENIED. 1 Dismissal Letter Ref.
