Washington, D.C. 20554 News Media Information 202 / 418-0500 Internet: http://www.fcc.gov TTY: 1-888-835-5322 DA 10-1041 Release Date: June 8, 2010 WIRELINE COMPETITION BUREAU ANNOUNCES JUNE 23, 2010 ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION TO EXPLORE BROADBAND PILOT PROGRAMS FOR LOW- INCOME CONSUMERS WC Docket No. 03-109 On June 23, 2010, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (eastern daylight time), the Wireline Competition Bureau will host a roundtable discussion in the Commission Meeting Room to enable interested parties to discuss the design of pilot programs that would provide subsidies for broadband access to low-income consumers.1 The National Broadband Plan recommended that the Commission facilitate pilot programs for low-income consumers that will “produce actionable information to implement the most efficient and effective long-term broadband support mechanism.”2 The June 23, 2010 roundtable will initiate a discussion among interested parties about how to design broadband pilot programs for low-income consumers. The Bureau encourages participation from a wide variety of interested parties, including representatives from, but not limited to, academia, social service agencies, consumer advocate organizations, state governmental entities, tribal governments and/or organizations, and industry. The format of the roundtable will be a facilitated discussion led by Commission staff. During the roundtable, staff will solicit input from attendees on issues relating to pilot design, such as: · Pilot program goals and potential obstacles to achieving those goals · Criteria for, and selection of, carriers to participate in pilot programs · Criteria for, and selection of, consumers to participate in pilot programs · Scope and duration of pilot programs · Metrics to measure accomplishment of goals For planning purposes, the Commission would like to know whether you intend to participate in the roundtable.
