PUBLIC NOTICE Federal Communications Commission 445 12th St., S.W. Washington, D.C. 20554 News Media Information 202 / 418-0500 Internet: http://www.fcc.gov TTY: 1-888-835-5322 DA 10-1070 Released: June 14, 2010 PUBLIC SAFETY AND HOMELAND SECURITY BUREAU EXTENDS THE COMMENT DATE FOR THE PUBLIC NOTICE ADDRESSING INTEROPERABILITY, OUT-OF-BAND EMISSIONS AND EQUIPMENT CERTIFICATION FOR 700 MHZ PUBLIC SAFETY BROADBAND NETWORKS PS Docket No. 06-229 Revised Comment Date: July 19, 2010 On May 18, 2010, the Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau (Bureau) released a public notice (Interoperability PN) seeking comment on interoperability, out-of-band emissions, and equipment certification for 700 MHz public safety broadband networks.1 The Bureau set June 17, 2010, as the comment date for the Interoperability PN. The District of Columbia (District), one of the twenty-one states and localities recently granted conditional waivers for early public safety broadband deployment,2 has filed a request for a one-month extension of the comment date for the Interoperability PN.3 In support of its request, the District notes that the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) has opened a special application window for waiver recipients to apply for funding from the Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP) to support their early deployments.4 This application window closes July 1, 2010.5 Because the comment date for the Interoperability PN falls within “the very short period within which waiver recipients may prepare and file complex and resource-intensive BTOP applications,” the District requests that the Bureau grant a one-month extension of this date.6 1 See Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau Seeks Comment on Interoperability, Out-of-Band Emissions, and Equipment Certification for 700 MHz Public Safety Broadband Networks, PS Docket No. 06-229, Public Notice, DA 10-884 (rel. Reg. 27,984, 27,985 (May 19, 2010). 6 District Request at 2. 2 We agree with the District that a brief extension of the comment date for the Interoperability PN is appropriate under the circumstances. In particular, we recognize the magnitude and complexity of preparing and submitting BTOP applications. A brief extension of the comment date is necessary to ensure that waiver recipients participating in the BTOP application process have a fair opportunity to prepare and submit comments on the Interoperability PN as well. Accordingly, we extend until July 19, 2010, the comment date for the Interoperability PN. For further information about this Public Notice, please contact Jennifer A. Manner, Deputy Chief, Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau, at (202) 418-3619. Action by the Chief, Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau. - FCC -
