Comment Deadlines Set for Notice of Proposed Rulemaking
on Next Generation Broadcast Television Transmission Standard

On February 23, 2017, the Commission released a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) in 
GN Docket No. 16-142 seeking comment on its proposal to authorize television broadcasters to use the 
“Next Generation” broadcast television transmission standard associated with recent work of the 
Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC 3.0) on a voluntary, market-driven basis, while they 
continue to deliver current-generation digital television broadcast service (ATSC 1.0) to their viewers.1  
The Commission set deadlines for filing comments and reply comments at 60 and 90 days, respectively, 
after publication of the NPRM in the Federal Register.  A summary of the NPRM was published in the 
Federal Register on March 10, 2017.2 Thus, comments must be submitted no later than May 9, 2017.  
Reply comments must be submitted no later than June 8, 2017.  Commenters should follow the filing 
instructions provided in paragraph 82 of the NPRM.3 The NPRM is also available on the Commission’s 
website.4
