Washington, D.C. 20554 News Media Information 202 / 418-0500 Internet: http://www.fcc.gov TTY: 1-888-835-5322 DA 18-352 Released: April 10, 2018 PUBLIC SAFETY AND HOMELAND SECURITY BUREAU ANNOUNCES EMERGENCY ALERTING ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION Today, the Federal Communications Commission’s (Commission) Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau (Bureau) released its findings and recommendations from its investigation into the January 13, 2018, false ballistic missile alert that was sent to all of Hawaii using the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA). 1 The Report identifies best practices to guard against the issuance of false alerts and, if a false alert is issued, to swiftly correct any misinformation and mitigate the consequences. On May 15, 2018, the Bureau will host a public roundtable to share lessons learned and help encourage awareness and understanding of these best practices, as well as to promote a continued dialogue among stakeholders. The roundtable will be held in the Commission Meeting Room at (TW-C305), at FCC headquarters, 445 12th Street, S.W., Washington, D.C., 20554. The roundtable will be open to the public, and will also be streamed live at http://www.fcc.gov/live. Further details regarding the workshop participants, roundtable discussion topics, and times will be announced by a subsequent public notice.
