Federal Communications Commission DA 21-378 DA 23-302 Released: April 7, 2023 PUBLIC SAFETY AND HOMELAND SECURITY BUREAU ANNOUNCES COMMENT AND REPLY COMMENT DATES FOR 988 OUTAGE REPORTING NOTICE OF PROPOSED RULEMAKING PS Docket Nos. 23-5, 15-80; and WC Docket No. 18-336 Comments Due: May 8, 2023 Reply Comments Due: June 6, 2023 On January 26, 2023, the Federal Communications Commission (Commission) adopted a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) seeking comment on proposed rules to ensure that the Commission and those parties that provide life-saving crisis intervention services to people calling the 988 Lifeline, which includes the Veterans Crisis Lifeline, receive timely and actionable information about 988 service outages that potentially affect those services’ ability to meet the immediate health needs of people in suicidal crisis and mental health distress. Ensuring the Reliability and Resiliency of the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline; Amendments to Part 4 of the Commission’s Rules Concerning Disruptions to Communications; Implementation of the National Suicide Hotline Improvement Act of 2018, PS Docket Nos. 23-5 and 15-80, WC Docket No. 18-336, Notice of Proposed Rulemaking, FCC 23-7 (Jan. 27, 2023) (NPRM). The NPRM set deadlines for filing comments and reply comments at 30 and 60 days, respectively, after publication of a summary of the NPRM in the Federal Register. Id. at 1. On April 7, 2023, the Office of the Federal Register published a summary of the NPRM.
