Federal Communications Commission "FCC/DA XX-XXX" DA 24-372 Released: April 22, 2024 CONSUMER AND GOVERNMENTAL AFFAIRS BUREAU ANNOUNCES COMMENT DATES FOR MEP EVENT CODE NOTICE OF PROPOSED RULEMAKING PS Docket Nos. 15-91, 15-94 Comment Date: May 20, 2024 Reply Comment Date: June 17, 2024 On March 14, 2024, the Federal Communications Commission adopted a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking that sought comment on a proposal to revise part 11 of its Emergency Alert System (EAS) rules to add a new EAS event code for the delivery of critical messages to the public over television and radio about missing and endangered persons (“MEP”). See Wireless Emergency Alerts; Amendments to Part 11 of the Commission’s Rules Regarding the Emergency Alert System, Notice of proposed Rulemaking, PS Docket Nos. 15-91, 15-94, FCC 24-30, (rel. Mar. 15, 2024) (MEP Event Code NPRM). On April 18, 2024, a summary of the MEP Event Code NPRM was published in the Federal Register. Federal Communications Commission, The Emergency Alert System and Wireless Emergency Alerts, Proposed Rule, 89 Fed. Reg. 27699 (Apr. 18, 2024). The NPRM sets deadlines for filing comments and reply comments at 30 days and 60 days after publication in the Federal Register, respectively. Accordingly, comments must be filed by May 20, 2024, and reply comments must be filed by June 17, 2024.
