Federal Communications Commission DA 26-606 DA 26-606 Released: June 17, 2026 WIRELESS TELECOMMUNICATIONS BUREAU SEEKS COMMENT ON REQUEST BY GME PTY LTD FOR WAIVER OF PART 95 GMRS RULES WT Docket No. 26-157 Comment Date: July 17, 2026 Reply Date: August 3, 2026 On March 4, 2026, GME Pty Ltd (GME) filed a request for waiver of the Commission’s rules governing the General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) operations in the 462/467 MHz bands. Request For Waiver, Non-Docketed ECFS INBOX-1.3 (Mar. 4, 2026), https://www.fcc.gov/ecfs/search/search-filings/filing/103041261102813 (GME Petition). Specifically, GME requests waiver of three part 95 rules to permit additional location sharing and data transmissions for two proposed GME radios—a mobile device with a removable antenna for use in vehicles and a hand-held portable device with an integrated antenna. Id. GME seeks waiver of: section 95.1731(d) to allow digital data transmissions from these devices; section 95.1787(a)(1) to allow both devices to transmit location information and a brief text message within the location data sent to all GME users within range; Id. at 4-5. and of section 95.1787(a)(3) to increase the automatic digital data transmission rate from once within a 30-second period to once within a 15-second period under certain conditions. Id. at 5. GME also proposes several safeguards to protect against interference from its devices to the other users of the band. Id. at 6. Noting that (1) Any transmission of digital data that is not appended as a tail to a voice transmission shall employ a “listen before send” mechanism that checks that the channel is free before transmitting the data burst; (2) any periodic transmission of digital data shall only occur if the GMRS unit has received a location services data burst on the currently selected channel within the last 30 minutes; and (3) transmissions would not use the 467 MHz main channels at all to avoid any chance of interference with repeaters. GME argues that grant of this request would serve the public interest as it would increase the “available safety features for GMRS radio users, especially those who are offroad and in rural and remote areas without reliable cell service.” Id. at 6. Additionally, GME suggests that prior GMRS waiver grants such as those given to Midland Radio Corporation and Garmin International, Inc. support grant of this waiver. Id. at 6, 7 (citing Midland Radio Corporation Petition for Waiver of Certain FCC’s Rules to Authorize a Radio System to Improve Safety for Off-Road GMRS Users, Order, 38 FCC Rcd 6583 (WTB 2023) (Midland Safety Waiver); Garmin International, Inc. Request for Waiver of Section 95.1787(a)(3) of the Commission’s Rules, Order, 40 FCC Rcd 122 (WTB 2025) (Garmin Safety Waiver)).
