The District proposes to add a base station to its public safety radio system operating in the 470-512 MHz band (T-Band). See File No. 0011989455 (filed Apr. 9, 2026), attached Letter from Craig Brozio, District Manager, Port Jefferson Fire District, Board of Fire Commissioners, to FCC, Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau (dated Mar. 11, 2026) (Waiver Request). Per section 1.925 of the Commission’s rules, 47 CFR § 1.925. the District seeks waiver relief of section 90.305(a) of the Commission’s rules because it proposes to operate a base station located more than 80 kilometers (50 miles) outside of the city center coordinates of New York, New York. 47 CFR § 90.305(a) (the transmitter site(s) for base stations shall be located not more than 80 kilometers (50 miles) of the geographic centers of the urbanized areas listed in 47 CFR § 90.303); Waiver Request. Port Jefferson operates a single base station radio system under call sign WRZN551 on frequency pair 470/473.6375 MHz in the TV Channel 14 band (470-476 MHz). The District states that “with the transmitter at its current location, we have found that due to the hilly terrain of Port Jefferson and Belle Terre, there are areas of weak signal strength, poor building penetration and substantial dead zones, leading to poor readability and reliability which significantly impairs our effectiveness.” Waiver Request at 1. Port Jefferson states that “[t]he requested waiver is necessary to ensure reliable communications coverage in our response area.” Id. Port Jefferson states that “the requested location of a second transmitter is approximately 50.3 miles from the New York City center point, an insignificant distance over the 50 mile limit.” Id. at 2. The District asserts that a waiver grant would serve the public interest. Id. at 2.
