FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: News Media Contact: April 2, 2001 Meribeth McCarrick at (202) 418- 0654 e- mail: mmccarri@ fcc. gov DIANE CORNELL TO LEAVE THE COMMISSION Washington, DC – Diane Cornell, Associate Bureau Chief of the Wireless Telecommunications Bureau, announced today that she is leaving the Commission after thirteen years on April 6 to become Vice President for Regulatory Policy at the Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association (CTIA). “Diane has served as an exceptional public servant during her time at the Commission,” said Tom Sugrue, Chief of the Wireless Bureau. “Her dedication, intelligence and leadership have been invaluable.” Since January 1999 Cornell has served as Associate Bureau Chief of the Wireless Bureau. In that position she has served as “Chief of Staff” for the Bureau, overseeing the Bureau’s activities in a number of cross- cutting spectrum policy projects, such as such as the “3G” initiative and secondary markets proceedings, as well as administrative functions such as strategic planning, coordination with Commissioners’ offices, tracking and selected rulemaking proceedings. Prior to joining the Wireless Bureau, Cornell served the FCC in various other positions. From October 1994 until January 1999, Cornell served as Chief of the Telecommunications Division of the International Bureau. In that position she was responsible for the FCC’s international policy rulemakings, facilities and service authorizations, and coordination with other countries and multilateral organizations on telecommunications issues. Cornell also handled many of these matters in her role as Chief of the International Policy Division of the Common Carrier Bureau before the FCC reorganization which created the International Bureau. During the first several months of 1994, Cornell served as Acting Senior Legal Advisor to FCC Chairman Reed E. Hundt. From 1989 until mid- 1992, Cornell was FCC Commissioner Sherrie P. Marshall’s Telecommunications Legal Advisor. Prior to joining Commissioner Marshall’s staff, Cornell served in the same capacity for Commissioner Patricia Diaz Dennis. Cornell joined the FCC in 1987 to work in the Common Carrier Bureau’s Policy and Program Planning Division. Before joining the FCC, she was senior associate specializing in telecommunications with the law firm of Squire, Sanders and Dempsey in Washington, D. C. Cornell received her B. A. degree from Wesleyan University and her J. D. degree from the University of Pennsylvania. - FCC - 1
