 ROBERT  ATKINSON  APPOINTED 
 CHAIRMAN  OF  THE  NORTH  AMERICAN  NUMBERING  COUNCIL 


 Washington,  DC  –  The  Federal  Communications  Commission  (FCC)  today 
 announced  the  appointment  of  Robert  Atkinson  as  Chairman  of  the  North  American 
 Numbering  Council  (NANC).  The  NANC  advises  the  FCC  on  matters  relating  to  the 
 administration  of  numbering  resources.  Mr.  Atkinson  replaces  John  Hoffman,  who 
 resigned  last  month. 


 Mr.  Atkinson  was  formerly  a  Deputy  Chief  of  the  FCC’s  Common  Carrier  Bureau 
 from  January  1999  to  June  2000.  He  is  currently  the  Executive  Director  of  the  Columbia 
 Institute  for  Tele-  Information  (CITI)  at  Columbia  Business  School  in  New  York. 


 “Bob  Atkinson’s  experience,  demonstrated  skill  in  telecommunications,  and  his 
 prior  work  at  the  Commission  will  serve  him  well  as  the  Chairman  of  the  NANC,”  said 
 Yog  Varma,  Deputy  Chief,  Common  Carrier  Bureau.  “I  am  certain  that  Bob  will  be  able 
 to  forge  a  consensus  among  NANC  members  and  ensure  that  NANC’s  recommendations 
 serve  the  public  interest,”  Mr.  Varma  added. 


 Atkinson  joined  the  FCC  at  the  beginning  of  1999  after  a  27-  year  career  in  the 
 telecommunications  industry  including  13  years  with  Teleport  Communications  Group 
 (TCG),  the  nation’s  first  Competitive  Access  Provider  (CAP)  and  Competitive  Local 
 Exchange  Carrier  (CLEC).
