C. – The Wireless Telecommunications Bureau (WTB) of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) announces today that an option to translate its website into various languages will be initiated on a trial basis. The Wireless Bureau’s website can be accessed at http:// www. fcc. gov/ wtb. The Translation option allows people of diverse cultures to make better use of the Wireless Bureau’s resources. The translation option uses the AltaVista Translation box (also called Babel Fish) software to enable users to translate material on the WTB Website from English to a number of different languages. Currently there are four languages supported; Spanish, French, German, and Italian. After a language is chosen from the Translation option box in the lower left- hand corner of the new page, the user will be provided with a link to the translated page and an announcement regarding the translation software. After the translation link has been accessed, the web site will continue to translate pages in the selected language. “I want to recognize the dedication of staff members who are undertaking this initiative” Tom Sugrue, Chief of the Wireless Telecommunications Bureau said. “The option to translate our website into various languages has the potential to be invaluable to users of different nationalities.” The Wireless Telecommunications Bureau is asking for comments concerning translation capabilities on the Wireless Bureau’s website. After a page is translated the user will have the option to participate in a survey regarding the effectiveness of the translation. Consumer feedback will be greatly appreciated and will assist in the Bureau’s continuing efforts to improve public access to information. - FCC – Wireless Telecommunications Bureau contact: Jennifer Bush (202) 418- 0586; or for technical information: Steve Miller at (202) 338- 2623. 1
