Joining FCC Chairman Michael Powell, FCC Commissioners Abernathy, Copps and Martin and FCC staff in this discussion will be Industry Canada Assistant Deputy Minister Michael Binder, other Canadian representatives and local embassy officials from South Korea and the United Kingdom. The event, the first in a series of discussions in the FCC’s new Twenty- First Century International Communications Symposia, will be open to the public. “Understanding the broadband experiences of other countries is essential so that the FCC has the broadest possible view of the issues we face in the United States,” stated FCC Chairman Michael Powell. “I am delighted that Michael Binder will join us to provide a uniquely Canadian perspective on the challenge of broadband deployment, especially in rural areas. I also will greatly value the additional perspectives offered by South Korea and the United Kingdom. I view this as the first in an ongoing dialog with my counterparts on the top priorities facing the FCC.” The Twenty- First Century International Communications Symposia series will bring together leading regulatory and policymaking authorities from around the world to focus on key issues, including: (1) broadband policy, (2) spectrum allocation policy, (3) competition policy, (4) media regulation review and (5) homeland security. The FCC International Bureau is coordinating the 21CIC initiative, with major support from other Commission Bureaus and Offices. The May 22 session will be open to the public and held from 1: 00 to 5: 00 p. m. at the Federal Communications Commission, 445 12 th Street, S.
