C. – Today, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) released a preliminary compilation of financial and operating data concerning communications carriers for the year ending December 31, 2002. The Statistics of Communications Common Carriers, issued annually since 1939, is a reference work widely used by academics, consultants, and other researchers in the field of telecommunications. In order to expedite release of the information, the FCC is making all of the data avail-able electronically at this time. The report is divided into five sections: (1) general information on industry structure; (2) financial and operating data relating to telephone carriers; (3) data on international communications; (4) historical financial and operational information; and (5) data on industry trends. The tables in Parts 1, 2, and 4 that concern the reporting of incumbent local exchange carriers do not include 2002 data for Qwest Corporation or any estimates for that carrier. Qwest’s annual financial reports to the FCC are not available at this time. After Qwest’s 2002 results become available, that information will be included in the printed version of the report, which will be released at a later date. At that time, when the final report becomes avail-able for purchase from the U. S. Government Printing Office, a second news release will be issued by the FCC. The report is available for reference in the FCC’s Reference Information Center, Court-yard Level, 445 12th Street, S. W., Washington, D. C. Copies may be purchased by calling the FCC’s duplicating contractor, Qualex International, at (202) 863- 2893.
