News Media Information 202 / 418- 0500 Internet: http:// www. fcc. gov TTY: 1- 888- 835- 5322 December 30, 2003 INTERNATIONAL BUREAU AND OFFICE OF ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY ANNOUNCE UPCOMING MEETING FOR INTERNATIONAL TELECOMMUNICATION UNION ULTRAWIDEBAND TASK GROUP The FCC’s International Bureau (IB) and Office of Engineering and Technology (OET) announce the third international meeting of the International Telecommunication Union – Radiocommunication Sector (ITU- R) Task Group (TG) 1/ 8 on compatibility between Ultra-wideband (UWB) and radiocommunication services in Boston, MA from June 9- 18, 2004. On December 18, 2003, ITU- R TG 1/ 8 released a circular letter inviting participation and explaining administrative details of the meeting. The United States was the first administration to develop rules for the introduction of UWB devices. Government and industry are participating in the ITU- R TG 1/ 8 with the objective of developing international standards and recommendations to protect existing radiocommunication services, while exploiting the benefits of the technology for the international community. The Boston meeting will include exhibits, demonstrations, hardware prototypes, and information presenting the business projections for the introduction of UWB technology in the United States.
