C. – Today, FCC Chairman Powell addressed a meeting of the International Telecommunication Union in Boston regarding the compatibility between ultra-wideband devices (UWB) and radiocommunication services. In a prerecorded message, the Chairman spoke to the international audience of spectrum management experts from over 30 countries. He emphasized the need to develop a regulatory environment that would facilitate efficient use of scarce spectrum resource by allowing the introduction of innovative technologies like UWB, while ensuring that existing operators are protected from harmful interference. “In today’s environment where spectrum resources must be used efficiently to meet escalating demands, it is vital that we all make interference and sharing decisions that promote the best use of spectrum, ” said Powell. “The ITU’s work in developing UWB global standards and recommendations is important for furthering this goal.” FCC Office of Engineering and Technology Chief, Mr. Ed Thomas, will welcome the delegates at a special event tonight. In addition, the meeting will include several UWB industry group- sponsored events, seminars, demonstrations, exhibits and lectures. On June 14, there will be a technical symposium on “Exploring the Nexus between Global Adoption of Ultra- Wideband Technologies and Present Operational Conditions.” Additional information is available on the ITU website at: http:// www. itu. int/ md/ meetingdoc. asp? type= sitems& lang= e& parent= R00- SG01- CIR- 0061 .
