S. SMALL BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION Washington, DC – Eric Malinen, of the FCC’s Office of Communications Business Opportunities (OCBO), has been named FCC Liaison to the U. S. Small Business Administration (SBA). In addition to his duties as FCC Liaison to the SBA, Mr. Malinen will continue his current duties as Senior Legal Advisor to the OCBO Director, Carolyn Fleming Williams. Mr. Malinen’s new position reflects his longstanding work with the SBA. Since December 1996, when he joined OCBO, Mr. Malinen has specialized in small business telecommunications matters and has worked closely with three SBA offices: the Office of Advocacy, the Office of the National Ombudsman, and the Office of Size Standards. He has also instituted FCC in- house programs to ensure that the Commission meets its ongoing obligations under the Small Business Act, the Regulatory Flexibility Act, the Small Business Regulatory Enforcement Fairness Act of 1996, and the Small Business Paperwork Relief Act of 2002. Ms. Williams stated, “Eric’s efforts have consistently had a positive impact on the FCC’s relationship with the SBA, and I know that he will be an outstanding liaison.” Previously, Mr. Malinen served as a senior staff attorney in various positions within the Wireless Telecommunications Bureau and the former Private Radio Bureau. Before joining the FCC in 1988, he was an Associate Counsel for the former U. S. House Subcommittee on Telecommunications and Finance (1987), and prior to that was a research attorney in Minnesota. He was Law Clerk to Justice Lawrence Yetka of the Minnesota Supreme Court. He received his J. D. from the University of Minnesota Law School, where he was Managing Editor of the Law Review, and a B. A. in Economics and Political Science from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota. - FCC - 1
