FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: News Media Contact: August 11, 2004 Lauren Patrich at (202) 418- 7944 e- mail: lauren. patrich@ fcc. gov MICHAEL WILHELM NAMED CHIEF OF THE PUBLIC SAFETY AND CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE DIVISION OF THE WIRELESS TELECOMMUNICATIONS BUREAU Washington, DC – John Muleta, Chief of the FCC’s Wireless Telecommunications Bureau, has announced that Michael Wilhelm will become Chief of the Bureau’s Public Safety and Critical Infrastructure Division. “Michael displayed tremendous leadership in guiding several crucial public safety matters to successful completion, particularly the Commission’s recent unanimous approval of a plan to resolve interference to public safety radio systems in the 800 MHz band,” said Mr. Muleta. “He will be a tremendous asset to me in addressing the difficult communications issues facing first responders and critical industries.” Most recently, Mr. Wilhelm was the Division’s Deputy Chief (Legal). In his new position, Mr. Wilhelm will oversee all policy, regulatory and licensing matters related to public safety entities, the Nation’s critical infrastructure industries, and private wireless radio services. Mr. Wilhelm previously served as a staff attorney with the Bureau’s former Public Safety and Private Wireless Division, during which time he was named Designated Federal Officer to the Public Safety National Coordinating Committee. Before joining the Commission, Mr. Wilhelm was a partner in the law firm of Verner, Liipfert, Bernhard, McPherson and Hand, now Piper Rudnick, and also served as a Special Counsel for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. He received a Bachelor of Philosophy degree in Communications from the University of Detroit, a Masters of Arts degree in Communications from the University of Michigan, and a J. D. degree, with high honors, from the University of Florida Law School, where he served on the Editorial Board of the Law Review and was a member of the Order of the Coif. - FCC - 1
