C. – The Federal Communications Commission has released the agenda and list of speakers for “Unleashing the Educational Power of Broadband,” a Symposium to be held on Wednesday, October 6, 2004, at FCC Headquarters, 445 12 th Street, S. W., Washington, D. C. beginning at 9: 00 a. m. Speakers will include FCC Chairman Michael Powell, FCC Commissioners Kathleen Abernathy, Michael Copps and Jonathan Adelstein as well as schools and libraries leaders. Background on Symposium To present this full day symposium, the FCC is partnering with the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), an independent federal grant- making agency dedicated to creating and sustaining a nation of learners by helping museums and libraries serve their communities, and the Universal Service Administrative Company (USAC), the independent not- for- profit corporation that administers the Universal Service Fund. The event will explore ways to use broadband to facilitate learning in schools, libraries, and the home. Among the presenters will be participants in the Schools and Libraries Universal Service program, also called the “e- rate,” which was established as part of the Telecommunications Act of 1996 to provide affordable telecommunications services for all eligible schools and libraries, especially those in rural and economically disadvantaged areas. Speakers will also include teachers and librarians with first- hand experience using digital resources and assessing their impact on learning.
