POWELL ON THE TRANSITION TO ON- LINE REGISTRATION FOR COMMERCIAL LINKS IN THE 70 GHz, 80 GHz, and 90 GHz BANDS Today’s transition to on- line registration for commercial links in the 70 GHz, 80 GHz, and 90 GHz “millimeter wavelength” spectrum bands is a terrific example of how public- private partnerships can enhance the provision of telecommunications services to consumers across the country. Link registrations for commercial users of this shared spectrum, which is allocated for use by both the Federal Government and commercial users, is now managed by three independent database managers – Comsearch, Frequency Finder, Inc., and Micronet Communications, Inc. The key to the success of this project has been the great collaboration and cooperation between the FCC and the National Telecommunications and Information Administration at the Department of Commerce. I congratulate Michael Gallagher and the NTIA staff on their truly modernized frequency coordination system that will allow non- federal users to expedite the launch of services on these shared frequencies. Our partnership with NTIA and the cooperative management structure we have created will encourage the commercial use of this spectrum for innovative broadband applications and serves as a model for future automation of spectrum coordination between federal and non-federal users. -- FCC – News and other information about the Federal Communications Commission is available at www. fcc. gov. 1
