Copps was sworn in today by Chairman Kevin J. Martin for a second term as a member of the Federal Communications Commission. His new term will run through June 30, 2010. Copps has been a member of the Commission since 2001. Copps stated, “The last four and a half years have been tremendously transformative for the world of telecommunications and the media. The future holds even greater challenge. I look forward to continuing to work with my colleagues on the Commission, with the Congress, and with all other stakeholders to help bring the most advanced, accessible, and cost- effective communications system in the world to all American consumers.” Prior to his service at the FCC, Copps served as Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Trade Development at the U. S. Department of Commerce. Copps came to Washington in 1970, joining the staff of Senator Ernest Hollings (D- SC) and serving for over a dozen years as Chief of Staff. Copps received a B. A. from Wofford College and earned a Ph. D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Copps is married to the former Elizabeth Catherine Miller of New Orleans.
