Summit on 911 Call Center Operations and Next Generation Technologies Federal Communications Commission Commission Meeting Room Wednesday, February 6, 2008 Remarks of Commissioner Robert M. McDowell (as prepared for delivery) Good morning. Thank you for inviting me to join you. It’s good to see so many folks here this morning. Many thanks to the Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau for organizing this outreach summit. I also thank the panelists for coming in to share your knowledge and experiences with us. I have consistently maintained the importance of keeping our nation’s emergency response providers up-to-speed on the latest technologies, systems and network services. I am pleased that the Commission today provides a forum for exploring new ideas for enhancements and future capabilities of 911 systems, which will benefit public safety personnel serving on the front lines each day. I am also hopeful that today’s discussions will be a springboard to a meaningful partnership among the commercial wireless industry, technology providers, and public safety entities that will ensure the best possible access to Enhanced 911 location information for the benefit of wireless callers and emergency response providers. I look forward to continuing to work together to ensure that consumers and first responders alike will benefit from technological advances in as expeditious a time frame as possible. Harnessing your expertise – and building upon the ideas you share at today’s summit – moves us ahead toward resolving technology and related challenges in a straightforward, comprehensive and transparent manner. Again, thank you. And, best of luck for a successful day.
