CLYBURN ON CTIA GUIDELINES TO ALERT MOBILE CUSTOMERS ABOUT SERVICE OVERAGES “I applaud Chairman Genachowski for urging the mobile wireless industry to adopt voluntary measures that alert consumers when they are approaching usage levels that would cause them to incur higher fees for voice, text, and data services. The most recent federal government survey on wireless substitution shows that more than 29.7 percent of American households rely only on mobile wireless service for their voice service. Particularly in difficult economic times, we should do all we can to help Americans manage their mobile wireless expenses. Steve Largent of CTIA has shown leadership by persuading his members to adopt meaningful alert guidelines. Perhaps the most important aspect of these guidelines is that CTIA’s members agreed to procedures that will allow the FCC staff to track their compliance with these measures. I hope that the Commission will keep open our Bill Shock proceeding and not hesitate to act if, despite these voluntary efforts, rules are still necessary to protect consumers.” -- FCC--
