FCC ANNOUNCES SPEAKERS FOR MOBILE DEVICE PROTECTION TUTORIAL
Washington D.C.  – The Federal Communications Commission will host a live and online 
tutorial for consumers on how to protect smartphones and other mobile devices – and the data on 
them – from theft and misuse.  The tutorial is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, October 
28, 2014, and is timed to provide consumers with key information about how to protect 
themselves in advance of the upcoming holiday season when purchases of mobile devices 
increase and consumers could be at greater risk of theft while shopping in crowded public 
locations. 
The event will be held in the Commission Meeting Room located at 445 12

Street SW, Room 
TWC-305, Washington, DC 20554.. 
The speakers are:
? John Breyault, National Consumers League: John will discuss the importance of 
protecting yourself from mobile device theft and why consumers should be concerned about 
it.
? Metropolitan DC Police Officer:  A representative will provide advice on “situational 
awareness” (tips on how to avoid becoming the victim of phone theft). 
? Delara Derakhshani, Consumers Union: Delara will review the importance of pins and 
passwords. She will demonstrate how to use them and how to take a screenshot of the 
phone’s unique identifiers. This information is important in the event that the device is lost or
stolen.
? Jon Bassford,Application Developers Alliance: Jon will provide an overview of the variety 
of existing apps and provide pointers on how to choose the right one for you.
? Best Buy: Members of Best Buy’s in-store Blue Shirt team and Geek Squad will give 
practical advice on upgrading your current phone or purchasing a new one.
? Debra Berlyn, Executive Director of Project GOAL; President, Consumer Policy 
Solutions; and immediate past Chairperson of the FCC’s Consumer Advisory 
Committee (CAC): Debra will review what to do if your phone is stolen.
Members of the public are invited to attend, learn from subject matter experts and participate in 
an interactive discussion. The Commission will also provide audio and video coverage of the 
discussion on the FCC’s Web page at www.fcc.gov/live.  Video of the different segments will be 
available after the event and distributed through social media.
