Carr Applauds Introduction of Bipartisan Legislation to Ban TikTok The ANTI-SOCIAL CCP Act Would Protect Americans and Strengthen U.S. National Security WASHINGTON, DC, December 13, 2022—Today, Congressman Mike Gallagher and Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi introduced a bipartisan bill to ban TikTok. Companion legislation was introduced in the U.S. Senate by Senator Marco Rubio. Their legislation would end all commercial operations of TikTok in the U.S. and other social media platforms that are sufficiently controlled or influenced by America’s foreign adversaries, including China, Russia, and Iran. Their legislation comes on the heels of a new wave of bipartisan concern with TikTok. Administration officials from FBI Director Christopher Wray to the Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines have spoken out publicly in recent weeks to note the extraordinary and concerning threats posed by TikTok. And this bipartisan legislation follows strong action by at least ten Governors to ban TikTok from public devices in their states. Commissioner Carr issued the following statement: “This bipartisan bill demonstrates that the tide has turned on TikTok. There is now widespread consensus in the U.S. that TikTok presents an unacceptable risk both to our national security and to the safety and privacy of millions of Americans. That is why a broad cross-section of national security experts have gone public in recent weeks to express their concerns with TikTok’s unchecked operations in the U.S. The question is no longer whether TikTok’s ongoing operations will come to an end, but when. “I applaud Congressman Gallagher, Congressman Krishnamoorthi, and Senator Rubio for their strong and bipartisan leadership. Their bill will advance America’s national security and ensure that we address the threats posed by a range of foreign adversaries. “With this bipartisan consensus in mind, I want to reiterate my call for the Administration to complete its ongoing national security review of TikTok, which is being run out of the Treasury Department. As I stated previously, I do not see a path forward for anything other than a ban. So it is time for the Administration to act with the urgency that this national security threat demands.” ### Office of Commissioner Brendan Carr Media Contact: Greg Watson www.fcc.gov/about/leadership/brendan-carr (202) 418-0658 or greg.watson@fcc.gov
